Conference in Poland

From Organism to Society

Whitehead and the Modern World

First call

May 7-8, 2010

Location: Franciscan Monastery

in Katowice-Panewniki, 76 Panewnicka Street

We are pleased to announce the eight annual conference organized by the Whitehead Metaphysical Society in cooperation with the St. Bonaventura’s Franciscan Seminary in Katowice-Panewniki and the Department of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Krakow. As we did in previous years, we are meeting in May at the Franciscan Monastery to discuss various issues related to broadly defined process philosophy.

Process thinking, organism philosophy and studies of social phenomena are all inextricably related. If these terms are to be understood broadly, the scope of the conference covers a wide area of issues which deserve attention of not only the philosophers. Alfred North Whitehead advocated a metaphysics built upon notions of process, organism and society, so his patronage over our conference seems to be natural – but we are not willing to limit ourselves to discussing his worldview. We warmly invite representatives of philosophy, biology, sociology, psychology, economy, cultural studies etc. who would like to present and discuss ideas concerning the foundations of their disciplines related to the above mentioned categories.

We offer you 30-minute presentations. The conference materials will consist of detailed extended summaries of the presentations, which should be not shorter than 3 pages. Please send that extended summary alongside the submission using the foreclosed form to the Conference Secretary by March, 30th 2010.

Important note: the deadline has been changed and is now April, 10th.

The Conference Scientific Committee reserves the right to select the papers. Articles based on presentations delivered at the Conference may be later submitted to the following issue of Studia Whiteheadiana. The amount of conference places is limited. Conference languages: Polish, English.

There will also be time at the Conference for student presentations. We kindly request to inform students interested in the subject. The topics of students’ presentations with summaries should be sent by their academic supervisors.

The conference fee is 30 (2 nights' accomodation, meals, conference materials). The fees may be paid at the conference upon arrival, but we kindly ask to inform us in advance if you wish the amount of nights or meals tobe different than default.

On Friday evening (May 7th) at 7 p.m. the Annual General Meeting of the Metaphysical Society will be held. We warmly invite not only the Members, but also persons willing to join the Society or simply to take part in the meeting.

Conference Scientific Committee: Janusz Mączka PhD (PAT Krakow), Mirosław Patalon PhD (UG Gdansk), Janusz Jusiak (UMCS Lublin).

Conference Secretary: Łukasz Lamża MA, lukasz.lamza(at)gmail.com
